Study Task 6- Project Proposal

LAUIL501                                                       Proposal planning
What is your question / theme?  Fetishism, Idols, fertility, relics
Why is it important or interesting? It is interesting because I can make comparisons that span time and cultures- there are lots of examples and nooks to explore, concerning idolism and fame, relics and statues and how the human body is explored and represented visually, the way people have changed their whole body and ideals of culture, sometimes based on opinions of people in influential positions and very small details that have caused shame or empowerment.
What are the important points / arguments / theories / concepts? (include key writers - theorists) How do they relate to the question / theme?

Important points to focus on are –
-chinese foot binding- how 1000 years of a disabling act in a static culture was formed from an emperor preferring smaller feet on his court dancers.

-african fetish relics and motifs-

-modern day barbie culture- the fast-changing nature of western body ideals every decade, and the influencers such as the kardashians- people who are famous for literally looking nice and being rich- how people come into power and have status in this changing economy, celebrities, surgery, corsets, and more importantly why do we feel the need to fit into an ideal and always shame our natural bodies in some aspect.
We’re all literally just animals, this is a social concept.
How do you intend on exploring the question / theme? (methodology)
  • Primary research - visits - questionnaires - focus groups
  • Secondary research - reading - podcasts - documentaries/ sources of info
  • Practical activities - processes (screen print - photography - collage - drawing etc) - going somewhere - performance - collecting - curating - proposing an event or exhibition

I intend to visit some galleries and museums to find relics used for worship and fetish.
I might also conduct some research concerning how influenced people feel by pop culture icons.

Why are you using this process / activity - how does it relate to the question / theme? (Justification)
It’s always good to get a historical viewpoint on it, see some actual relics and fetish objects that have existed.
and of course, a survey will give me more insight into how modern day people actually feel about themselves and how influenced they are by icons.
i will use monoprint as this is extremely useful in my practice due to the handmade feel of it and will reflect my handmade process. I will also do some ceramic work as this is crucial to exploring in a tactile way the sculpture of a relic.
