What is the role of creative practice in shaping identity?'
This is Quite a Big Question.
Our group work was about mass media and memes. I had the pleasure informing several people about who gemma collins is, proof that mass media doesn't reach all and you can to some extent filter what you want to see. Culture can change and shift and is personal and individual; it is available to all but not necessarily relevant to everyone. For example, the media i choose to see on my twitter feed is completely different to someone sat next to me on the train. however when things go viral, it is a mass way of connecting and a relating with someone else on a common ground. People used to lend each-other books that had themes in common, or recommended films, or pass notes around a class. The same thing happens now, except the format has changed. I often wake up to see my friend has sent me a tweet, often a picture of a duck. If i come across a tweet i believe a friend will enjoy, I can deliver it straight to their phone. It's all about sharing things we have in common with others or can relate to other people. And the way we all identify with something specific becomes part of our identity as as a person- it is a part of our everyday lives.
