...Practitioners?

...Practitioners?

I first came across Mr Bingo's work during last year's foundation course, and instantly related my own practice to it and saw a piece of something special. The wit and the humour of the rude language and childish text contrasted with the detailed, careful, almost precious drawings came as a welcome shock to me visually, not having come across anything similar in my life, ever. I fully enjoy the wide use of materials included in his work, yet there seems to be a visual consistency- something i myself struggle with keeping, as my thoughts tend to go all over the place and create kind of visually unappealing work a lot of the time. This work, however, has a dried, finished, well presented feel to it, like an exhibition of his Hate Mail postcards instead of a funny book. No wonder his project had t close for submissions after six days of being open- I assume people just want a little bit of a thing to treasure, especially one that relates to them.

David Shrigley
Ah, the precious Mr. Shrigley, possibly my favourite practitioner. With his swishy quick lines and jumbled up  short sentences, he hardly classes as a professional. His childlike humour is so pure in its form, and so face-value and slapstick, yet also so crude you want to hide it away when the neighbors pop over. It is so lovely how he tells a story in a page of ink- usually non sequential, very non-verbal, and even less talented artistic drawings to create whole pieces of work that are super weird and lovely and precious, even at their most self-depreciating or most macarbe. There is always a little kick of irony and tongue-in-cheek about him, i dont think he takes himself too seriously, to be honest.

MMMMMM how tasty is this!! so witty , so visible for a young artist, so damn relatable. Yes. Tell those adults off. Her platform on social media is so visible, and her work so relatable to current day people of most ages- how she reaches an audience this large and entertains baffles me- though not particularly refined, her work is lovely and simple visually, consisting of just line and block colour, made whole by the text. I must admit a jealousy i have of her work- it is superbly witty, stunningly funny and dry, and i cannot imagine having those thought processes and being that intellectually refined and clever and expressing it through art- especially at the age of 18. Damn.
